Codex proposal of Maximum Level of Lead in Juices

At the 38th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Geneva, 6-11 July 2015), a lower maximum level (ML) for lead in fruit juices and nectars (excluding juices exclusively from berries and other small fruits and passion fruit) was adopted at 0.03 mg/kg. It was also agreed to re-establish the electronic-WG to continue to work on outstanding issues related to the review of MLs for lead in fruits and vegetables in the GSCTFF, namely review of MLs for passion fruit juice; juices and nectars from berries and other small fruits.

On 12 February 2016, the eWG circulated its proposal, which contained the following recommendations:

 

  1. Juices and nectars from berries and other small fruits: Postpone the decision on juices and nectars from berries and other small fruits to allow submission of new data; consider MLs of 0.03 mg/kg and 0.04 mg/kg in 2017.
  2. Passion fruit juice and nectar: Consider including in the fruit juices category with an ML of 0.03 mg/kg.

 

This will be discussed in the 10th Session of the Codex Committee on Contaminants in Foods (Rotterdam, NL, 4 – 8 April 2016).
